An Afternoon at Tate Modern

Sunday 28th October 2007

“Sometimes is hard to tell the difference between art and…“. And indeed sometimes it is! … But just occasionally, it reaches beyond the mundane, the uninspired and the pastiche…

The gallery of ‘Material Gestures’ exhibited a true sense of political and aesthetic antagonism towards tradition.

The ‘Poetry and Dreams’ exhibition included some of the most fantastic pieces of surrealism … (despite Frances Bacon … and those film shows of ants and confetti(!)).

‘Idea and Object’ … Yep, we get the idea of negative space, minimalism and conceptual art – thanks! … Perhaps though we have now entered the realm where there is no longer any reactionary purpose; that aesthetics are valued beyond reality, and that reality itself is merely transitory…

The final gallery we visited was ‘States of Flux’. … Cubism, Futurism and Vorticism… Tate (Post)modern! … otherwise known as – ‘we still have quite a few Picassos that we haven’t hung yet’. This exhibition leaves you with a sense of apathy towards contemporary art – or maybe our feet were just getting tired by this point! – Time to follow the breadcrumbs (orange lamp posts) back to Southwark Tube Station and then to a pub!
